Floral Collar: Lantern Hanging for the Old Royal Naval College

As part of the rolling conservation works at the Naval College in Greenwich, we had been asked to replicate a repoussé ‘floral collar’. This decorative component is part of the detailing on the lantern hanging systems throughout the colonnades.

An original collar was supplied as a model which we photographed and measured to ensure an accurate reproduction.

This item was made in three stages.

  1. The core shape was spun in malleable brass from a drawing I produced.
  2. These two identical ‘trumpet’ shapes were mounted in lead to enable the veining to be applied. The leaf forms were then cut and curved to finish the shape.
  3. The component parts (including the middle collar – also spun in two halves) were soldered together to complete the assembly.
